Decision-making is foundational for individuals and teams. While many are adept at making decisions, others are not. Decision-making is a process. Many use the “Observe-Assess-Act” model in making decisions, which is a concise model. It can be used in rapidly evolving environments, but its use may not be applicable in all circumstances. The ability to recognize decision-making as a process and not a reflexive act is beneficial since many in our organization fail to make decisions or make swift decisions which could have been better. Better decision-making result is better performance.

An organization must understand that the influences of decision-making can be political, factual, emotional, personal, or irresponsible. Identifying these influences are crucial. If an influence can be identified, it can be managed. Managing the influences or social norms of the organization lead to effective decision-making.
